Welcome to SSMTE

The school compromises of 4 main disciplines: Science Education, Mathematics Education, Technology Education, and Computer Science Education and offers over 65 - 75 modules per semester in its various programmes in different modes. The SSMTE has 27 permanent staff and employs over 50 non-permanent staff for the delivery of its various disciplines, both at Edgewood and PMB. The school has 3 professors and 6 senior lecturers amongst its staff. About 40 % of the academic staff holds a PhD. Both under-graduate and post-graduate programmes are offered and staff teaches across schools and campuses.

As part of the College of Humanities at UKZN, Faculty of Education, the SSMTE is committed to developing the university as a premier institution of African scholarship. Thus our strategic vision and mission emphasizes the intellectual, educational and cultural development of the region and globally in its concerns around Mathematics, Science & Technology Education in general, ICT education, IKS & AIDS research, and Curriculum issues in SSMTE education. The staff are committed to democratic values and social justice, and to responding to the development challenges of MST education and education in South Africa.

The Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa - AMESA - is the professional association of Mathematics educators in South Africa. AMESA is the voice of Mathematics Education in South Africa, representing the interests of the discipline and its members at provincial and national level. All who have an interest in the teaching and learning of Mathematics should belong to this dynamic Association.
